School Projects

Project I: Khalil Zaman Girls School in Jabul Seraj        COMPLETED

  • The school facility is now in operation bringing education to about 1200 students: girls in the morning and boys in the afternoon. Its 3rd school year recently commenced in late March 2008.
  • The building was started in 2004 and turned over to the Ministry of Education and opened in June 2005.
  • The school, including basic furnishings and a perimeter wall, cost about US$165,000 which was raised through community contributions from individuals, service organizations and foundations located in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and across the country.
  • The Jabul Seraj community is located about 50 miles north of Kabul.
  • AFDECT maintains communication with the school and provides additional support for female staff and a variety of small projects as needed beyond basic educational needs.

Project II: Proposed School for Guzar-Payan                 IN PROGRESS

  • Based on the remarkable success of AFDECT’s first project at Jabul Seraj,    a second school project is being initiated based on requests from the community.
  • The new school will be in the same northern province of Parwan in the village of Guzar-Payan, a more remote and smaller village of the city of  Jabul Saraj about 10 KM from the current school.
  • School activity currently takes place in very temporary rented facilities   with no school building and few amenities.
  • Current enrollment is 790 students: 500 boys in the morning and 290 girls in the afternoon. The faculty consists of 36 teachers, 4 females and 32 males. This should expand greatly with the construction of the new school building.
  • A local community leader is donating the land for this new school.
  • Several community leaders submitted a petition to local government requesting a school for their community.
  • Project cost is roughly estimated at US$185,000. Once again, we expect funding will come from private donations.        DONATE
  • A real school will mean real opportunities for education and beyond for the children in this community. The community has a need for this project and  is committing itself to its success.

Early Projects:

  • 2002: Founder Bill Gordon first visited Afghanistan and AFDECT funded a school for 200 girls in a refuge camp.
  • 2003: Provided school supplies to 6000 children in Kabul. Provided shoes for 300 children so they could better walk to school.
